Q: My wife and I are both in our mid-sixties, retired and have total IRA assets of roughly $650,000 with about two-thirds of that amount in regular IRAs and one-third in Roth IRAs. We currently have a diversified portfolio of low-cost index funds consisting of large and small cap equities, international equities and U.S bond funds. Pensions and Social Security generate about $65,000 in annual income. Each year we withdraw approximately $20,000 from the regular IRAs and $5,000 from the Roth IRAs to produce a total annual income of $90,000. What would be the advantages and disadvantages of investing all the Roth IRA assets in a variety of income producing bond mutual funds to generate $10,000 - $12,000 of tax free income each year and reduce the withdrawals from the regular IRAs accordingly?
